The Boyfriend "Check-list"

One great reader who has been here since the beginning recommended I make up a "check-list" for dating. This can easily help weed out the wrong ones from the beginning.
Meeting so many creeps over so many years has made me realize what is truly important in a guy and what I really want.
If I were to write a checklist now of how it looked years ago, I realize it appears totally shallow. Really, you have to laugh at how superficial it is and I'm not even sure if I realized that years ago. Go ahead, call me a shallow b*tch, I deserve it now that I look back..

Height- I've always had a height obsession. It started back at UConn when I lived next door to 4 of the basketball players. Really, it's the only reason I watch bball games - the guys. I'll never forget when I was at a business dinner in the city and 6of the NY Knicks came in. I was so awe-struck through the entire meal, I didn't even eat.
Dating a guy only over 6 feet is WAY too selective. I realize now all that is necessary is he is taller than I am in heels.

Deep Voice - One guy I dated did voice-overs. His voice was so amazing that I actually saved voice mails from him for about a year. My friends would flip when they heard his voice. Again, this should not be important. Just as long as the guy doesn't sound like Kermit I'm good.

Blue eyes- A perfect example of how picky I was. I love blue eyes. Now I know, that eye color really doesn't matter. As long as he doesn't have creepy eyes, like scary 'cupcake date' that spook you out when you look into them.

Good job/good dates- I think I was a job snob back in the day. I loved going to rooftop bars, great restaurants and the car service that a lot of times was offered. This was back when the finance guys were booming and throwing money around like it was water. The schmucks were probably expensing the entire date. It was fun for a while but I truly know now this stuff is not important and a lot of those types of guys just keep moving on from one girl to the next.
These days if you give me a nice guy who takes me to a pizza joint, I'm happy. (as long as it is good pizza)

Adventurous/Exciting - Maybe the spontaenous, exciting type of lifestyle these guys led went right along with their dating the 'flavor of the month'. Adventurous is still good, but I need to find someone who is more stable.

And this brings me to my present check-list, which I will post tomorrow.
I'm proud to say it is WAY different than this last one. Because I truly now know what I want and most importantly, what is most important in a guy. So, bring the brown-eyed, shorter guys on! :)

How true...women and men alike. We all crave this dream person..too the point that if the RIGHT one does come along we don't usually notice till they've gone!

This sounds like my recent "man cocktail" posting-- trying to figure out what you really want and what is a deal breaker.

Height is a major thing for me too. One, because I'm short and two...it's just hot. I feel you on that one.

And I don't think that list is shallow at all! It's part of what makes you who you are. No shame!

I don't know...I tend to agree with you on the height thing. My husband is 6'4" - the tallest man I have ever been with and it's wonderful! Also, I'm 5'8" so it does make a difference to me that I can still be shorter than my man when wearing heels.

Sure, give shorter guys a chance, but tall guys definitely rule!

I call this my Man List. It currently has 72 items on it. At first I thought I was being obsessive but then I found a guy that actually does match all 72 items. Why not go for the gold?

He he, I like your old list and can't wait to see the new list. Blue eyes, spontaneous, and tall are all good traits. But yes, someone who is more stable is definitely really important. Have a super night darling!

Your list reminded me of a joke I found on someone's blog and reposted it on mine recently about how the list of wants changes with time. Check it out if you get a second. It is amusing: http://lifeaseyeseeit.blogspot.com/2009/05/blog-stalking.html

Hello, I just found your blog. Interesting post. I too have a "list"...it was an ideal one (for me.) The basics on it stay the same though. All else are "fillers" subject to change.
Please do check out my new blog. Thanks!

Hi TCG - your "old" checklist is okay, but I bet your "updated" one will be great. Always better to keep your sights up rather than settling for a dud or what could have been. Stay well TCG.

many people have a checklist for the perfect person they want. i myself love a guy with dark hair and blue or green eyes but those are small things that arent very important. we all realize later in life what is really more important in the person you are looking for. i agree about the pizza joint. some of the best times i have with my boyfriend is going to a pizza place (not too close or too far from either of us) that we love and we just get some pizza or other food and just hang out and listen to the music playing. those are great memories. my boyfriend has mentioned his parents going there when they were dating and now we do it. we make jokes about how our kids will do the same in the future.
